About Us

The Academy of Dance is one of York County's longest established Dance studios, with locations in Biddeford and Wells.  The 2016-2017 season is our 13th year of family-friendly dance.  Our highly trained instructors are passionate about their classes and students.

Our goal in teaching has always been to offer high-quality, small classes at reasonable prices, and to teach dance in a fun and creative way.  We want every student to learn confidence and technique, and to have a great dance experience.  We believe that all our students are shining stars, and this is reflected in the high number of students who re-register each year.  We look forward to teaching you too!

Owner Caroline Varney started dancing at the age of two. She earned her degree in dance at Pretoria University in South Africa and has toured professionally in South Africa, England, Austria and Spain.  She previously owned The Academy of Dance in New York, and thoroughly enjoys teaching Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical and Flamenco.

Caroline and husband Warwick run the studio, and are proud parents of 6 children.

Our Classes

We offer a wide range of child and adult classes in Princess Ballet, Mummy & Me, Pre-Dance, Tap, Ballet & Pointe, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, Irish Step & Flamenco.

Our curriculum is always growing, and every year we add more classes to cater for our growing student numbers.

Some of our dance styles are offered as part of Combination classes, where 2 or 3 dance styles are taught within one class.  These classes are a great opportunity to learn more than one dance style, while benefiting from great pricing and only having to attend one class a week.  Each dance style is performed as a separate routine at Recital.

Performances and Competitions

The studio holds two performances each year, where every student gets to perform on stage in front of family and friends.  Our Holiday Show is held in mid-December, and for the past two years we have presented a full Production of the Nutcracker (click to view a video highlight).  All students regardless of age get to perform.  Our June recital is a slickly run professional production to ensure that the hard work put in by our students over the year is properly exhibited.  All our performances are held in a first class venue with production sized stage and theater style seating.
Performance teams have additional opportunities to perform during the year, including dancing at Competitions, sports events (e.g. Portland Sea Dogs) and special events (like St Patrick's Day celebrations).

Costume costs vary depending on the number of classes and the type of class (Combo classes have one costume for each dance style).  Costume selections are finalized by the end of the calendar year, and are payable shortly after.  We offer a number of fundraising opportunities to help towards costume costs.  Costumes are not ordered until they are paid for in full.
